1988 Seoul Olympics Poster - Kim Ki-Chang

This poster by Korean artist Kim Ki-Chang is an excellent example of one of the commissions made for the 1988 Olympics held in Seoul, Korea. Lloyd Shin, the gallerist and publisher, collected many of these commissions - initially made by the IOC - in the run-up to the start of the games.

The 1988 Seoul Olympics were the second summer Olympic Games held in Asia and the first held in South Korea. The Soviet Union dominated the medal count, winning 55 gold and 132 total medals. Compared to the previous two Olympic Games in Russia (1980) and Los Angeles (1984), boycotts had almost disappeared. North Korea declined to take part, as did Cuba, Albania, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Madagascar and Nicaragua. This resulted in the largest number of participating nations during the cold war era.
